waxAre candles made of wax? This is the question put by all the people that approach this
wonderful world. The answer is “yes, they are”, but also “no, they aren't”.
All candle are made of wax, but we need to agree on what you think wax actually is.
People often think that wax is beeswax, but this is not true. Wax is one of the states (like
solid, liquid, jelly) taken by materials that have a low melting point and is at least a little
ductile at room temperature. All candles are made of wax because exactly the above
mentioned physical properties make them work. There are 3 kinds of waxes: vegetable
waxes (palm and soy wax, etc.), animal waxes (beeswax, stearing, etc.) and (synthetic
(very special and not used in the candle industry).
Most candles on the market are made of paraffin wax.
Paraffin wax is a very stable material, it does not react with any chemical substance and
has no impact on the envirnment. It is linked to processing carried out in oil refineries. As
a matter of fact, paraffin wax is a by-product of lubricant production; if not used for
candles, it should be burnt in the chimneyes that dominate all oil refineries.
